First Steps

You can immediately search for content, but you will not be able to view, copy, or print without installing the ebrary Reader™ software.

To search the ebrary collection of authoritative copyrighted documents:
1. Check your system requirements (See below)
2. Download and install the ebrary Reader software so you can view pages, search within documents and take advantage of powerful navigation and comprehension capabilities. 

Download the software. Includes complete installation instructions. 

3. Sign in (Optional) Create a bookshelf so you can use the notes, highlights, and bookmark features. 

Click the Sign in button (as shown on the right). Click on the "Do you need to create a new bookshelf?" link and fill in the form. For more information about your bookshelf, go to Your Bookshelf

4. Find out more about how to find content (See below).

System Requirements
 
CPU
  • Pentium (75 MHz or more) for Windows minimum, Pentium II or newer recommended, 

  • Windows NT, XP, or Windows Vista (IE only)
  • Power PC or Intel processor for Apple Macintosh, 

  • Macintosh OS 10.1 or newer.
Memory
  • Windows or Macintosh: minimum 128 MB of RAM, 512 MB or more RAM recommended
Web browsers
  • Safari 1.1 or newer
  • Forefox 1.0 or newer
Hard disk space
  • Windows or Macintosh: minimum 5 MB 

Note: LINUX and UNIX platforms are not supported at this time.

AOL USERS: For best results, AOL users should be using the latest version of AOL, and instead of the default AOL browser, use your Internet Explorer system browser. The default AOL browser does not always recognize the ebrary software.

Using this Site
 
 
1. Sign in. (Optional) You do not need to have a bookshelf to search or view content, but it is required if you wish to use the notes, highlights, and bookmark features.

Click the Sign in button in the left frame (see below). Enter your username and password. If you do not have a bookshelf, click on the "Do you need to create a new bookshelf?" link on the sign in page. For more information, go to Managing Your Bookshelf.

2. sign in and search Find documents.

2a. To access more search options, click on the Advanced button. To use a single field search, click on the Simple button. 

2b. Enter a word or phrase in the text field. 

2c. Specify which part of the documents to search. 

2d. Add or remove sets of search fields, or reset the search frame with empty text fields. 

2e. Select a specific category, document type, and/or lanugauge of documents to be searched. 

2f. To execute the search, click the Search button. Results will appear in the right frame.

2g. Change languages. To change the language used for search results, document display, help, bookshelf management, etc., select the desired language and click the button.

A list of documents matching the search criteria are shown in the right frame. 

3a. Number of documents found, and method used to sort them. Documents are originally sorted by Score. The higher the score, the more times the search criteria were found in the document. 

3b. You can re-sort the results by:
Score
Title
Contributor
Date of publication

3c. Twenty document results are displayed per page. Click on Previous or Next to get to the next/previous page of results, or click on a number to go to that page. To view pages that go beyond the range shown, click on the highest (or lowest) number shown.

4. Open

document.
4a. To view a document listed in the Search results (as shown above), click on its title or cover. This opens the document display, showing the first highlighted instance of the specified search criteria, i.e., a text phrase. If no term was specified, the document is opened to the first page. 

4b. The area in the left frame contains the document’s author, publisher, and copyright information (as shown below). It also lists how much of the document is viewable.

5. Explore
the
document.
5a. Tables of Contents are shortcuts to sections in the document. Click on them to jump ahead to a particular chapter or section. Use the Toggle Contents button to turn these features on and off. 

5b. Use the ebrary Reader toolbar to explore the document. These features include:
The InfoTools pulldown menu.
Copy a text selection to the clipboard, with automatic bibliographic citation.
Print pages.
View/hide Table of Contents, Notes, and Highlights.
Highlight specific text using choice of highlighter color (yellow, pink, or blue).
Bookmark a specific page and add personal notes.
Go to the previous/next highlighted search selection in the document.
Zoom.

6. Continue

To continue searching, get help, or return to the home page, use the tabs and buttons in the left frame. basic navigation
7. Access
your
bookshelf
information.
Click on the Bookshelf button in the left frame to access your bookshelf, update your information, or change your password
8. Sign-Out. At the end of your session, please remember to sign out. This step is particularly important if your computer is in an unsecured area, or it is shared with other users.
